Romania – Switzerland was played at the National Arena in Bucharest. Both teams had already qualified for the EURO 2024 in Germany, so the only stake in the game was the team to finish first in Qualifying Group I.
Romania came after an impressive game away with Israel, while Switzerland after another disappointment for the team’s fans – a draw at home with Kosovo.
More than 50,000 Romanian fans encouraged their favourites from the stands, and Romania didn’t disappoint them.
Alibec scored in ’50, and Romania took the lead after Switzerland had more possession in the first half. The home team continued to have some good opportunities to score another goal but with no success. Switzerland had the most significant opportunities, but the Romanian goalkeeper did wonders and maintained the advantage.
Edward Iordanescu, the Romanian coach, has successfully built a team, and his contribution to making Romanian football reborn from his own ashes cannot be denied.
Romania finishes Group I first, undefeated and with a strong mindset for EURO 2024. The team ends the campaign with 5 points above Switzerland, which is quite a performance.
Congratulations to all the players, the coach and the technical staff for this challenging but impressive campaign!
