The Tradition of Mărțișor and the Quiet Brilliance of Liana Alexandra

Every culture has its way of announcing spring. In Romania, it arrives not with spectacle but with a thread: red and white, resilient and spare, tied to a small token and offered on the first day of March. The custom—Mărțișor—is disarmingly modest. It also demands something exacting of us: to notice renewal while it is still tentative, to honor beginnings before they become visible, to practice gratitude ahead of evidence. In 2017, UNESCO placed this ritual on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a reminder that even the smallest gesture can carry a civilization’s memory of renewal.
